2014 seeing a jolt in mergers and acquisitions activity

Mergers and acquisitions are an integral part of American businesses. Merging with another business or acquiring another company can cut expenses, increase profits, and give some businesses and their owners exit strategies.

The positive aspects of these business maneuvers are highlighted in a recent study that found that the first quarter of 2014 saw a lot of mergers and acquisitions activity. In fact, this year's first quarter was the most active with regard to business mergers and acquisitions since early 2007. And the deals are getting larger. The average deal size so far this year is $632.8 million, with an aggregate deal amount of more than $275 billion.

Though mergers and acquisitions seem to be getting more and more popular for businesses and their owners, it is important to recognize that such deals require sound legal planning. Inaccurately drafting or executing a business transaction can result in a scenario where unintended consequences result. For example, the business and/or its owners could lose money and waste their valuable time. For this reason, it is imperative that those considering the sale of a business consult with an experienced business attorney.

A local New Jersey attorney can assess the situation at hand and help businesses and their owners analyze every aspect of the deal, ensuring no stone is left unturned. Then, a business attorney can draft the documents necessary to complete a business sale or merger and engage in negotiations. In the end, business sales should be conducted in a business' best interests, and those interests should be reflected in the finalized, signed legal documents. By utilizing an attorney, businesses and their owners put themselves in a position where they are protected and ready for whatever the future holds for them.
