Startups don't necessarily need to fear the big businesses

Imagine for a moment that you have just created the start-up company of your dreams. A year ago, it was nothing but an idea in your head, and you never could have imagined that all of the pieces would line up so perfectly. Today, your small company seems on the verge of a big breakthrough -- but you're not quite sure how to take that next step.

What many entrepreneurs may think at this point is that they should avoid the big companies and any help they offer. "I've carried this business over the last year," the entrepreneur may think. "Why should I settle now? I can get us past this hurdle."

While it's certainly possible that you could push your company to that next level, sometimes it is best to give in to the fact that you need a little help. Big companies or corporations can be very useful in this regard.

Inherent to the corporate structure is a need for invention and an influx of talent. Your company could be exactly that. This doesn't mean you are resigned to being bought by the bigger company -- but they may be willing to provide you with key resources for a little bit in return.

Another way that corporations can help your startup is the old adage of networking. Go to corporate-sponsored events and get to know people with the company. They may be able to give you some one-on-one help before the big machine comes calling.

Last but not least, if you are considering getting involved with a bigger company or a corporation, it behooves you and your startup to have adequate legal representation to ensure your interests are protected.
