The Weather Channel fights back in contract dispute with DirecTV

New Jersey cable or satellite customers have experienced what happens when a provider and a channel argue over money. Last year, several contract disputes led to providers cutting off channels that they felt were being unreasonable in their price demands. Now, in response to its contract dispute with The Weather Channel, DirecTV has removed it from its lineup and added WeatherNation, another 24-hour weather channel.

In response, The Weather Channel has launched an unprecedented media campaign against DirecTV. The company says that by removing it from the lineup, DirecTV has put people's lives in danger. According to the campaign, The Weather Channel is not merely entertainment, but works to provide crucial information to people during severe weather events. The Weather Channel representatives go on to say that the company is only asking for a one-cent increase per customer in its carriage fees, which it believes is not unreasonable.

For its part, DirecTV denies claims that it is not concerned with viewer safety. Representatives for the satellite provider also contradict The Weather Channel's assertion that it only wants one-cent per customer. According to DirecTV's chief content officer, the amount is actually significantly higher and the two sides are no closer to an agreement. He goes on to say that DirecTV hopes an agreement can be reached.

The Weather Channel's approach of vilifying DirecTV appears to be a strategy not tried before in this type of contract dispute. Whether it will help resolve the differences between these two companies remains to be seen. Getting back to the negotiating table and working out a compromise both sides can live with may happen at some point. Until then, New Jersey DirecTV customers are getting their weather information from WeatherNation.
