Campbell Soup's business planning includes New Jersey closure

Campbell Soup has been busy. Their business planning has taken them through an acquisition, a sale, some closures and reorganization. The company's latest announcement is the closure of its spice-supply operation located in Plainfield and a soup canning plant on the west coast. The New Jersey facility is said to be set for closure in March 2013.

These closures come on the tail end of Campbell Soup's purchase of Bolthouse Farms, Inc., the baby carrot giant, and its sale of its vegetable seed operation to a French company. The closure of the spice-supply operation will affect 27 workers in New Jersey and 700 jobs on the west coast. Campbell Soup has also announced that it will be adding 50 new products to the company line.

According to Campbell's, all of these maneuvers are designed to increase the company's efficiency and reduce costs. It takes a lot of time and planning to roll out changes as big as these. Whether these changes accomplish what the company hopes remains to be seen.

Business planning is a fluid process that typically requires periodic review. As the economy shifts and consumer demands change, a company needs to constantly update its business plan. Once any adjustments are made, the plan may require further review to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Planning for these periodic reviews and adjustments may help to give a company the best chance at success in an unforgiving market, and that is as true for a large company like Campbell Soup as it is for a small New Jersey family business.
